Quick answer
Heat pump installation in the High Desert typically runs $4,500 to $11,000 in 2026 for a standard ducted system. Cold-climate variants for Wrightwood, Phelan, and Oak Hills elevations run $6,500-$13,000. Most installs qualify for SCE rebates of $300-$1,500 depending on SEER2 tier.
Heat pump install pricing across the High Desert tracks national HomeGuide ranges of $4,500-$11,000 installed for standard ducted systems. The big variable in HD is elevation. Hesperia, Apple Valley, and Victorville (2,700-3,500 ft) run fine on standard SEER2 14-16 heat pumps. Phelan and Oak Hills (3,800-4,200 ft) work better with cold-climate variable-speed units rated for sub-30°F operation. Wrightwood (6,000 ft) needs cold-climate equipment, period. Standard heat pumps lose capacity at the temperatures Wrightwood hits in January and February. Federal IRA 25C and 25D tax credits expired December 31, 2025, but SCE rebates of $300-$1,500 are active through 2026 with no expiration announced.
What it costs
Real numbers, not estimates.
| Range | Tier | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| $4,500-$6,500 | Standard SEER2 14-16 | 2-3 ton ducted heat pump. Hesperia, Apple Valley, Victorville, Adelanto installs. |
| $6,500-$9,000 | High-efficiency SEER2 17-19 | Variable-speed inverter equipment. Carrier Infinity, Trane XV, Lennox SL. |
| $9,000-$11,000 | Premium / large home | 4-5 ton systems for 2,500-4,000 sq ft custom homes. |
| $6,500-$10,000 | Cold-climate (Phelan, Oak Hills) | Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora, Carrier Infinity GreenSpeed. |
| $8,500-$13,000 | Cold-climate (Wrightwood) | 6,000 ft elevation requires sub-5°F rated equipment. Often dual-fuel. |
| +$1,500-$3,000 | Electrical panel upgrade | 100A to 200A panel upgrade when older home cannot support added load. |

What drives the price up
Why your quote might be higher.
-
Cold-climate inverter equipment
Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora, Carrier Infinity GreenSpeed cost $1,500-$3,000 more than standard SEER2 14-16 heat pumps but maintain rated capacity at sub-30°F. Mandatory for Wrightwood, recommended for Phelan and Oak Hills, optional for lower-elevation HD cities.
-
Electrical panel upgrade
Heat pumps pull more amps than gas furnaces and need dedicated 240V circuits. Older HD homes with 100A panels often need upgrading to 200A. Adds $1,500-$3,000 to install. Most post-2010 HD tract homes already have 200A.
-
Larger system size
4-5 ton systems for 2,500-4,000 sq ft custom homes (common in Apple Valley Hills, Oak Hills, Lake Arrowhead access areas) cost 25-40% more in equipment than 2-3 ton systems for tract homes. Larger refrigerant lines, larger air handler, and higher BTU capacity.
-
R-454B (A2L) refrigerant transition
Industry shifted from R-410A to R-454B starting in 2025. R-454B requires updated leak detection and slightly different install procedures. Equipment pricing has settled but supply varies by manufacturer.
What drives the price down
How to save money.
-
SCE heat pump rebates
Southern California Edison runs ongoing rebates of $300-$1,500 on qualifying heat pumps. Tier depends on SEER2 rating and equipment type. Pulls real install cost closer to gas furnace cost in dollars out of pocket.
-
Like-for-like swap on existing AC pad
When existing ductwork, electrical, and outdoor pad are already sized correctly, install drops to one day with no system upsizing. No panel upgrade or duct rework needed.
-
Off-season scheduling
April-May and October-November are the cheapest months. Summer peak (June-August) and winter cold snaps fill the schedule and push pricing toward the higher end.
-
Manufacturer rebates
Carrier Cool Cash, Trane Comfort Specialist, Lennox seasonal promotions add $200-$1,000 instant savings. We pull current rebate sheets at quote time.
Rebates that apply in 2026
Real rebates.
SCE heat pump rebates run $300-$1,500 depending on SEER2 tier and unit type. Active for 2026, no expiration announced. Federal IRA 25C and 25D tax credits expired December 31, 2025. These previously added $2,000+ to many heat pump installs but no longer apply. SoCalGas rebates do not apply to heat pumps (electric only). Manufacturer rebates seasonally available with $200-$1,000 instant savings. We pull every applicable rebate at quote time and apply to your final price.
Honest take from the owner
Joey's straight answer.
Joey Condon's honest take: heat pumps make sense for most High Desert homes where both AC and furnace are at end of life. The SCE rebates close most of the upfront cost gap, and 10-year operating cost runs 20-30% lower than separate AC plus gas furnace. Where I push back is on Wrightwood installs without dual-fuel backup. At 6,000 ft elevation in a January cold snap, even a cold-climate heat pump runs at 60-70% rated capacity. Dual-fuel (heat pump plus backup gas or propane furnace) gives you the efficiency of heat pump operation 95% of the year and the reliability of gas backup for the worst cold snaps. Adds $3,000-$5,000 over standalone heat pump. For Hesperia, Apple Valley, and Victorville, standalone heat pump is fine. Wrightwood and high-elevation Phelan, dual-fuel is the right call.
