Rooftop evaporative swamp cooler installed at a High Desert home

Swamp Cooler
in the High Desert.

Swamp coolers (evaporative coolers) thrive in the High Desert's dry summer air. Our 25-35 percent relative humidity is exactly the climate evap was built for. We install, repair, maintain, and replace rooftop and ground-mount units across Hesperia, Apple Valley, Victorville, Phelan, and Wrightwood.

Swamp Cooler in our service area typically runs $185-$4,500. Same-day for repairs, 1-day installs. Pre-summer startup + winterization on the maintenance plan.

What we do for you

The full scope.

  • New swamp cooler installation (rooftop + ground-mount, single-stage + 2-stage)
  • Pad replacement (aspen + cellulose Munters-style 8-inch)
  • Pump, float valve, and water line repair
  • Motor and blower belt replacement
  • Pre-summer startup + winterization (turn-on / shut-down)
  • Conversion from swamp cooler to central AC (full system)
  • Hybrid setup (evap + AC running together for shoulder seasons)

How the job runs

Diagnose → quote → fix → verify.

01

Inspect

Check pump, float, motor, belt, pads, water line, and roof penetration condition. Photograph any rust, leaks, or pad damage.

02

Quote

Written estimate before any work. For pad-only swaps we quote on the spot. For motor or pump replacements, parts on the truck means same-visit completion in most cases.

03

Service

Service or install. New pads installed in 30-45 minutes. Pump replacement runs 60-90 minutes. Full unit installs take 4-6 hours.

04

Verify

Run cycle for 10-15 minutes after work. Measure supply temp drop (target 15-25 degrees below outdoor on a 95 degree HD day). Show you the readings.

What it costs

Real numbers, not estimates.

Range Tier What it covers
$185-$385 Pad replacement + tune-up Seasonal aspen or Munters pad swap, pump and float check, water line flush
$285-$685 Pump or motor repair Pump replacement, blower motor, belt + bearings, float valve
$1,500-$4,500 New install Rooftop or ground-mount unit + ducting + electrical, 1-day install
$5,800-$12,000 Convert to central AC Remove swamp cooler, install central AC + ductwork (paired with our AC installation service)

Ranges reflect typical High Desert swamp cooler work. Pad-only service is the most common annual touch. Full replacement install pricing varies with unit capacity (3,000 to 6,500 CFM) and roof condition.

Common local issues

Built for our climate.

Low HD humidity = ideal evap conditions

Our summer afternoons average 18-32 percent relative humidity. Swamp coolers work by evaporating water into the airstream. The drier the incoming air, the more cooling per gallon. HD is one of the most evap-friendly climates in the US.

95 degree threshold for satisfying cooling

A well-tuned swamp cooler drops supply air 15-25 degrees below outdoor temp. Below 95 degrees outside, that means indoor temps in the 70s - comfortable. Above 100-105, the math runs thin. Many HD homeowners run evap on shoulder months and AC during peak.

Hard water scales the pads and pump

HD municipal water carries 15-30 grains of hardness depending on city. Scale builds on aspen pads + pump impellers, dropping efficiency 20-30 percent over a season. Annual pad swap + pump flush handles it.

Roof unit windstorm exposure

HD spring + fall wind events stress rooftop mounts. We tighten cabinet bolts, reseal roof flashing, and check supply duct boots as part of every pre-season service.

Winterization prevents freeze damage

Phelan + Wrightwood + parts of Apple Valley hit sub-32 degree nights. A wet swamp cooler in October that freezes in December cracks the water tray. Fall winterization (drain, blow lines, cover) costs $145 and prevents a $385 spring repair.

JC Energy Solutions was by far offered the best service and quote in town. I had received 4 different quotes and JC Energy Solutions knew that I was trying to save money but get the best HVAC unit Heather and AC that would be reliable and last. Would recommend to family and friends!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a swamp cooler work in the High Desert?
Yes - HD is one of the best climates in the US for evap. Our summer relative humidity averages 18-32 percent. Swamp coolers cool by evaporating water; the drier the air, the bigger the cooling effect. On a 95-degree HD day a tuned unit drops supply air to 70-75 degrees. Above 100-105 outside, evap runs out of headroom and central AC becomes the better tool.
How much does it cost to run a swamp cooler vs central AC?
About 1/4 to 1/8 the electricity for equivalent cooling effect, plus 3-10 gallons of water per hour. On SCE TOU-D-PRIME peak rates, a swamp cooler running 8 hours costs roughly $0.80-$1.50 per day; equivalent central AC runs $4-$8. The trade-off is evap loses cooling above 100 degrees while central AC keeps working.
How often do swamp cooler pads need replacing?
Aspen pads: every spring (annually). Munters / rigid media pads: every 3-5 years depending on water hardness. HD's hard water shortens pad life vs softer-water regions. We swap pads as part of pre-summer startup service.
Can JC Energy Solutions convert my swamp cooler to central AC?
Yes. Full conversion runs $5,800-$12,000 depending on home size and whether existing ductwork can be reused. We remove the swamp cooler, patch the roof or wall penetration, install a new condenser + air handler + thermostat + new refrigerant lines, and commission the system. Permit pulled, inspection coordinated. Pairs with our AC installation service.
Should I just upgrade to AC or keep my swamp cooler?
Depends on three factors. Square footage: under 1,500 sq ft + HD location, evap usually wins on running cost. Peak afternoon temps: if you regularly hit 100+ degrees indoor with evap running, AC is the right tool. Operating budget: evap is cheaper to run but more annual maintenance touch. We will walk both numbers on a free consultation.
Do you service window-mount evap coolers too?
Yes. Window units, ground-mount portables, and permanent rooftop or wall-mount installs - we service all of them. Most HD homes have rooftop or wall-mount; we cover both.
What brands of swamp cooler do you install?
Mastercool (Champion Cooler), Phoenix Manufacturing (Phoenix + Aerocool), Frigiking, and Essick / Adobe Air. Most are interchangeable from a service standpoint. We recommend Mastercool for new rooftop installs based on parts availability and 2-stage efficiency.
Do you offer financing on a swamp cooler install?
Yes for installs over $1,000. GreenSky promotional plans (some 0 percent APR introductory periods) plus Wisetack soft-pull pay-over-time. See financing options. Pad-only service and small repairs are paid at completion.
