High Desert tune-ups
Furnace tune-up at altitude.
Gas burns differently at elevation. A furnace loses about 4% of its rated output for every 1,000 ft above 2,000 ft (NFPA 54), so in Hesperia, Phelan, Oak Hills, and Wrightwood the tune-up has to confirm the burners are set up for the thinner air, not just that the flame lights. Our full maintenance visit takes combustion readings (CO and O2) and checks gas pressure, which is how you catch a furnace that is burning rich, sooting the heat exchanger, or running on the wrong orifices after a propane conversion. The altitude guide lists the derate for each High Desert city. Inland Empire furnaces (under about 1,200 ft) do not need an altitude check, and the standard tune-up covers them.
Timing
When to book a furnace tune-up.
Book in September or October, before the first cold night. High Desert nights drop into the 30s well before the Inland Empire cools off, and the higher cities (Phelan, Oak Hills, Wrightwood) get there first. Once the first cold snap hits, calls for no-heat repairs fill the schedule and tune-up slots get harder to find. If you are on a Service Agreement, pick the fall window for your annual visit so the heating side is checked right before you need it.

Propane vs. natural gas systems

Rebates that apply in 2026
Real rebates.
Utility gas rebates (SoCalGas in 2026) apply to 92%+ AFUE furnace replacements, not tune-ups. Federal IRA tax credits expired December 31, 2025. The biggest "rebate" on tune-ups is the JCE Service Agreement: $180/year covers one annual maintenance visit for both heating and cooling, which runs $159+ a la carte.

Gas + propane combustion equipment can fail dangerously, cracked heat exchangers leak CO, dirty burners create combustion byproducts, and failed safety lockouts can prevent the system from shutting down on a fault. We do combustion analysis (actual CO/O2 measurements) on every tune-up. If your last furnace tune-up was 2+ years ago and you have natural gas or propane, schedule one before first cold snap.
